River Ganga at Dewapur

Welcome to my website.
It is the result of two life-long interests, the seeds of which were sown in the early sixties by a small set of Derwent Lakeland colour pencils, and a copy of the ‘Philip’s Modern School Atlas’.
Equipped with updated versions of something similar, I have retained and followed those two passions for the best part of 7 decades.
In those early years, places of close proximity felt more different to one another than they do now, yet they retain their different light, and a different texture. Visiting some nearby towns held me spellbound and I was absorbed by their history and their culture. I began to fill scrapbooks and sketchbooks.
School discouraged any career in painting – “You won’t make a living”, “Life will be a struggle”, “Better avoid” etc., so I graduated in landscape architecture and urban design. Four years practise did not supress these passions, which smouldered within.
Years of drawing, painting and travelling followed, and my figurative approach to painting landscapes, urban and rural, evolved from those that held me most spellbound.
My attempts to express that sense of place in mixed media have developed into the paintings you see on this website.
The site was recently expanded to include an ‘Encounters’ section of short stories, compiled from my diary entries made during the painting trips.
